Plectronia ventosa Linnaeus, Systerna Naturae, ed. 12, 2: 183; Mantissa Plantarum: 52. 1767.

"Habitat ad Cap. b. spei." RCN: 1626.

Lectotype (Ross in Bothalia 11: 491. 1975): Herb. Linn. No. 277.2 (LINN) .

Generitype of Plectronia Linnaeus, nom. rej.

Current name: Olinia ventosa (L.) Cufod. ( Oliniaceae).

Note: Plectronia Linnaeus, nom. rej. in favour of Olinia Thunb.

The name was evidently based on a mixture including Canthium inerme (L.) Lam. ( Rubiaceae) (as to the fruit characters and the Burman synonym). The rest of the generic description (Mant. Pl.: 6) was drawn from specimens in LINN, as noted by Bullock (in Kew Bull. 1932: 354. 1932). Sheet 277.2 (LINN) is accepted as the lectotype, with Olinia ventosa (L.) Cufod. as the correct name for the taxon, as treated by Sebola & Balkwill (in S. African J. Bot. 65: 100. 1999).
