Bdeogale Peters, 1850 . Spenersche Z., 25 June, 1850 (unpaginated).
TYPE SPECIES: Bdeogale crassicauda Peters, 1852; by subsequent designation by Thomas (1882) (Melville and Smith, 1987).
COMMENTS: Matschie (1895), Pocock (1916«), Coetzee (19776), Kingdon (1977), and Meester et al. (1986) included Galeriscus Thomas, 1894 . Rosevear (1974) believed that no one had advanced any "reasoned argument" for combining Galeriscus with Bdeogale, and followed Schouteden (1945) and Hill and Carter (1941) who considered them distinct; all have agreed that jacksoni and nigripes are sister groups.
