TYPE SPECIES: Paradoxurus trivirgatus Gray, 1832, by monotypy through the replaced name Arctogale Gray, 1865 (Melville and Smith, 1987).

SYNONYMS: Arctogale Gray, 1865 .

COMMENTS: Gray's (1864 [1865]) generic name stood until Merriam (1897) pointed out that the name Arctogale was preoccupied (= Arctogale erminea Kaup, 1829). First placed in the Paradoxurinae by Gray (1869); later separated into the monotypic Arctogalidinae by Pocock (1933d), and followed by Gregory and Hellman (1939); however, Simpson (1945), and Ellerman and Morrison-Scott (1951) retained it in Paradoxurinae .
