DISTRIBUTION: NE Spain, France; throughout Europe to the Irtysh and Ob Rivers (Russia, Kazakhstan).

STATUS: IUCN - Vulnerable.

COMMENTS: Youngman (1982) placed lutreola in subgenus Lutreola . Revised by Matschie (1912), Novikov (1939), and Youngman (1982; 1990, Mammalian Species, 362). Occasional hybrids occur between lutreola and putorius (Youngman, 1982) .
