Angelica sylvestris Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 251. 1753.
"Habitat in Europae frigidioris subhumidis sylvaticis." RCN: 2017.
Lectotype ( GutiƩrrez Bustillo in Lazaroa 3: 146. 1981): Herb. Linn. No. 354.3 (LINN) .
Generitype of Angelica Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 140. 1929).
Current name: Angelica sylvestris L. ( Apiaceae).
Note: Angelica sylvestris, with Herb. Clifford: 97, Angelica 2 (BM) as the type, was proposed as conserved type of the genus by Reduron & Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 557. 1992). However, the proposal was eventually ruled unnecessary by the General Committee (see Barrie, l.c. 55: 795-796. 2006 for a review of the history of this and related proposals). When Reduron & Jarvis (l.c. 41: 557. 1992) proposed the Clifford sheet as a conserved type, they were unaware of the earlier typification made by GutiƩrrez Bustillo (1981) based on 354.3 (LINN). Unfortunately, this specimen is identifiable as A. montana Brot. (sometimes recognised as a subspecies of A. sylvestris). With the failure of the generitype proposal, the type of A. sylvestris is now 354.3 (LINN). While Art. 57 provides some protection to the usage of A. sylvestris in its traditional sense, it seems that a proposal for its conservation with a conserved type is now necessary.
