Aspalathus uniflora Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 712. 1753.

"Habitat in Aethiopia." RCN: 5228.

Type not designated.

Original material: [icon] in Plukenet, Amalth. Bot.: t. 413, f. 7. 1705; Almag. Mant.: 88. 1700 - Voucher: Herb. Sloane 102: 197 (BM-SL) .

Current name: Aspalathus uniflora L. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).

Note: Although Dahlgren (in Opera Bot. 10(1): 85. 1965) indicated Herb. Linn. 295.13 (S) as the type, it is unannotated by Linnaeus and is not original material for the name. Dahlgren added that 893.34 (LINN), variously annotated with the epithets coronopifolia, ericifolia and uniflora, did not fit the protologue (though it is a good match for Linnaeus’ much-changed account of the species in Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1001. 1763), and that both the cited Plukenet illustration and its voucher material in Herb. Sloane 102: 197 (BM-SL) belong to A. macrantha Harv. As A. uniflora is in currrent use, it may be that a conservation proposal will be necessary.
