Anthoceros punctatus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1139. 1753.
"Habitat in Angliae, Italiae, uliginosis, umbrosis." RCN: 8153.
Type not designated.
Original material: [icon] in Dillenius, Hist. Musc.: t. 68, f. 1. 1741; [icon] in Micheli, Nov. Pl. Gen.: 11, t. 7, f. 2. 1729.
Generitype of Anthoceros Linnaeus (vide Evans in Britton, Fl. Bermuda 469. 28 Feb 1918).
Current name: Anthoceros punctatus L. ( Anthocerotaceae).
Note: Stotler & Crandall-Stotler (in Taxon 51: 628. 2003) proposed the conservation of Anthoceros, with A. punctatus as conserved type, in the belief that Schuster (in J. Hattori Bot. Lab. 26: 299. 1963) must be accepted as having designated A. laevis L. as the generitype. However, the proposal made no reference to Evans’ (1918), or later, generitype choices of A. punctatus, and the proposal was subsequently withdrawn (see Zijlstra in Taxon 54: 525. 2005).
Proskauer (in Rabenhorst’s Kryptogamen-Flora, ed. 3, 6: 1307. 1958) and later authors have treated material in Dillenius’ herbarium (OXF) as the type, but this was not studied by Linnaeus and, despite its apparent association with the cited Dillenian illustration, is not original material for the name. Isoviita (in Acta Bot. Fenn. 89: 16. 1970) noted duplicate material in H, and a review, with illustrations, is provided by Hässel de Menéndez (in Cryptog. Bryol. Lichénol . 5: 201-209. 1984).
