Arctopus echinatus Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1058. 1753.

"Habitat in Aethiopia." RCN: 7708.

Proposed conserved type (Van Wyk & al. in Taxon 55: 541. 2006): South Africa. Western Cape Province, Cape Town, Signal Hill, near Kramat, Manning & Reeves 2845 (NBG).

Generitype of Arctopus Linnaeus.

Current name: Arctopus echinatus L. ( Apiaceae).

Note: Burtt (in Edinburgh J. Bot. 48: 184. 1991) indicated material in the Clifford herbarium as a likely type, but no relevant specimen exists there. The same author subsequently designated a Burman copperplate (Rar. Afr. Pl. 1: t. 1. 1738, reproduced by Jarvis in Symb. Bot. Upsal. 33(3): 30, f. 5. 2005) as lectotype. Unfortunately, this is identifiable, not as A. echinatus, but rather as A. monacanthus Sonder. Van Wyk & al. (in Taxon 55: 541. 2006) therefore proposed the conservation of A. echinatus with a conserved type.
