Type Locality: "d'Amerique"; restricted to the type locality of Ovis montanus Ord, 1815, the Columbia River area, where observed by Lewis and Clark, in "the Cascade Mountains, and the nearby range" (Hollister, 1912:185) "near Mt Adams, Washington " (Dalquest, 1948:409) (USA, Washington, Cascade Mountains, Mt. Adams) .
Vernacular Names: Mountain Goat.
Distribution: SE Alaska (USA), S Yukon and SW Mackenzie (Canada) to NC Oregon, C Idaho, and Montana (USA). Introduced to Kodiak, Chichagof, and Baranof Isls (Alaska), Olympic Peninsula (Washington), C Montana, Black Hills (South Dakota), and Colorado (USA).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
