Type Locality: "a native of the Himalayah range and the mountains of the Nepaul frontier" (Nepal, Himalayas).

Distribution: Himalayas in Bhutan, China (S Tibet), N India (including Sikkim), Nepal, and N Pakistan.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Lower Risk (nt) as N. g. bedfordi and N. g. goral .
