Subgenus MORELLIA Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830

Diagnosis (modified from Nihei & Carvalho [2009]). Colour metallic bluish-black to violaceous; wing with or without maculae (maculate in several Neotropical species). Female with proclinate fronto-orbital setae usually developed; fronto-orbital plate setulose at least on upper half; interfrontal seta absent. Postsutural intra-alars 1; intrapostalar seta present. Prosternum setulose or bare. Katepisternals 1+2. Wing with the basal portion of stemvein setulose or bare dorsally and ventrally; apical portion of stem-vein setulose or bare dorsally; R4+5 setulose dorsally and ventrally (in some species bare ventrally); M curved forward towards R4+5 apically. Lower calypter enlarged posteriorly, extending under base of scutellum. Subcostal sclerite bare. Male mid femur of some species with a dorsal preapical protuberance bearing a dense set of setulae. Calcar strong, weak or absent (some Neotropical species).
