Type Locality: New Guinea, Prov. of Papua (= Irian Jaya), N slopes Snow Mtns (Pegunungan Maoke), Doormanpad-bivak, 2400 m, 03E30'S, 138E30'E (Laurie and Hill, 1954).
Vernacular Names: Western New Guinea Mountain Rat.
Synonyms: Rattus haymani (Ellerman 1941); Rattus klossi Thomas 1913 .
Distribution: Western New Guinea; recorded from the central mountainous backbone of Prov. of Papua (= Irian Jaya; Pegunungan Maoke) eastward to the Star Mtns in W Papua New Guinea (longitude 141 EE), 2200-4050 m (some of the material cited by Taylor et al., 1982 as Rattus niobe arrogans; Flannery and Seri, 1990; specimens in AMNH).
Conservation: haymani (Ellerman, 1941); klossi Thomas, 1913 [not Bonhote, 1906].
