Type Locality: Papua New Guinea, Eastern Highlands Province, Kratke Mtns, Buntibasa Dist, 4000-5000 ft (1220-1524 m).

Vernacular Names: Greater Macruromys.

Distribution: New Guinea; known from a few mid-altitude localities (1200-1500 m) on N slopes of Snow Mtns in Prov. of Papua (= Irian Jaya) and Central Cordillera of Papua New Guinea to the Eastern Highlands Province, southeast to Mt. Simpson (Flannery, 1990 b; 1995 a; Musser and Lunde, ms).

Conservation: IUCN – Endangered.
