Halobates micans Eschscholtz, 1822 and Halobates splendens Witlaczil, 1886
Halobates micans is the most widely distributed species of insect; it is found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans and is the only member of the genus in the Atlantic Ocean (Ikawa et al. 2012). It has been collected off the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica (Ikawa et al. 2012: Fig. 6), although we did not examine any specimens during this study. Similarly, we did not examine any specimens of H. splendens, but despite being more common south of the equator, this species has been collected off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica (Ikawa et al. 2012: Fig. 6).
