Andrena (Truncandrena) donata Warncke, 1967 stat. nov.

Andrena (Truncandrena) medeninensis ssp. donata Warncke, 1967: 227, ♀ ♂ [Spain, OÖLM, examined]

Remarks. Wood (2023b) presented genetic data on the subgenus Truncandrena Warncke, 1968 with a focus on the Western Mediterranean. This work elevated one member of the species complex around A. medeninensis Pérez, 1895 ( A. abunda Warncke, 1974) but was unable to conclude on the status of A. medeninensis ssp. donata which was described from Iberia due to a lack of genetic data. Such data are now available (Figure 49), and clearly support species status for A. donata stat. nov. Andrena donata is closest to A. abunda, forming a clearly differentiated clade with bootstrap support of 98. The two species are separated by 9.58% (range 9.44–9.73%), and A. donata is separated from A. medeninensis s.l. by 10.76% (range 10.05–12.18%).

Morphologically, A. donata can be separated from A. medeninensis s. str. in the female sex due to the stronger tergal punctation, head with a mixture of light brown pubescence with abundant black hairs along the inner margins of the compound eyes (in A. medeninensis s. str. with uniform orange-red pubescence), clypeus with longitudinal impunctate mid-line comparatively shorted and less strongly produced (in A. medeninensis s. str. with this mid-line long and strongly produced), scutum with intermixed light brown and black hairs (in A. medeninensis s. str. with uniform orange-red hairs), T1–2 with long loose light brown hairs (in A. medeninensis s. str. with sparse short hairs, almost without hairs), and T2–4 apically with narrow light brown hairbands (terga without apical hairbands). Males can be separated using the same pubescence characters, as well as the comparatively narrower genitalia capsule with comparatively narrower penis valves. Further study is required to establish the status of A. medeninensis tiznita Warncke, 1980, but for now it is retained as a dark western form of A. medeninensis .
