Glycyrrhiza echinata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 741. 1753.

"Habitat in Gargano Apuliae, in deserto Nagico Tatariae." RCN: 5460.

Lectotype (Chamberlain in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 50. 1993): Herb. Linn. No. 916.1 (LINN) .

Current name: Glycyrrhiza echinata L. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).

Note: Glycyrrhiza echinata was treated as the generitype by Britton & Brown (Ill. Fl. N. U. S., ed. 2, 2: 391. 1913; see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 373. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Green’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 175. 1929) of G. glabra L.

Chamberlain (in Davis, Fl. Turkey 3: 261. 1970) and Nadezhina (in Novosti Sist. Vyssh. Rast. 15: 174. 1985) treated material in LINN as type but failed to make an effective choice between 916.1 and 916.2 (LINN).
