Guaiacum officinale Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 381. 1753.

"Habitat in Hispaniola, Jamaica." RCN: 3007.

Lectotype (El Hadidi in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 51. 1993): [icon] " Lignum Vitae " in Sloane, Voy. Jamaica 2: 133, t. 222, f. 3, 4, 5, 6. 1725.

Generitype of Guaiacum Linnaeus, nom. & orth. cons, (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 152. 1929).

Current name: Guaiacum officinale L. ( Zygophyllaceae).

Note: “Guaiacum” is the original spelling but has sometimes been treated as an orthographic variant of “Guajacum” . The original form, “Guaiacum”, is now the conserved spelling. Ghafoor (in Nasir & Ali, Fl. W. Pakistan 76: 3. 1974) indicated 532.1 (LINN) as type but this is a Patrick Browne specimen, received by Linnaeus only in 1758 and therefore not original material for the name.
