Gorteria squarrosa Linnaeus, Plantae Rariores Africanar: 23. 1760.

["Habitat ad Cap. b. spei."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1284 (1763). RCN: 6573.

Lectotype (Roessler in Mitt. Bot. Staatssamml. München 3: 297. 1959): Herb. Linn. No. 1027.4 (LINN) .

Current name: Cullumia squarrosa (L.) R. Br. ( Asteraceae).

Note: Wijnands (Bot. Commelins: 81. 1981) argued that the typification by Roessler should be rejected because the thesis in which the Linnaean name was published was based largely on specimens lent to Linnaeus by Burman. While this is generally true, 1027.4 (LINN) is annotated as Gorteria squarrosa by Linnaeus, and appears to be original material for the name. Consequently, Roessler’s typification is accepted here.
