Gentiana autumnalis Linnaeus, Cat. Edwards’s Nat. Hist.: 11. 1776.
Lectotype (Pringle in Brittonia 19: 2. 1967): [icon] " The Autumnal Gentian of the Desart " in Edwards, Gleanings Nat. Hist. 1: 98, t. 255. 1758 (see p. 101).
Current name: Gentiana autumnalis L. ( Gentianaceae).
Note: Fernald (in Rhodora 52: 68-69. 1950) gives an informative explanation of the circumstances surrounding the publication of this name and states that it is based on Edwards’ plate and Bartram’s description. Pringle, however, referred to the plate as "the type".
