Ferrer-Suay et al. (2012) considered Alloxysta thorpei endemic to New Zealand, but subsequent information shows it is also found in Australia (Ferrer-Suay et al. 2014). It is probably an adventive species in New Zealand. No hosts have been recorded, but the species is found in many types of habitats and is widespread. North Island: AK, BP, CL, HB, ND, TK, WI, WN. South Island: MC, OL, WD.
