Myrsidea sp. 2
Material examined. Ex Trichothraupis melanops (Vieillot, 1818) —Black-goggled tanager ( Thraupidae): 1♂, San Rafael National Park, Paraguay (26°30'S, 55°47'W), 20 Aug. 2012, I. Literak.
Remarks. This is the first record of a chewing louse from Trichothraupis melanops . A portion of COI gene was sequenced from our single male specimen from T. melanops (GenBank accession number KY249558). Comparing our sequence with other known sequences of Neotropical Myrsidea, the closest was Myrsidea fusca (Carriker, 1903) (A/N FJ 171267) with a sequence divergence of 16.0%. Furthermore, Myrsidea sp. 2 is morphologically very close to M. patersoni Price & Johnson, 2009 (A/N GQ454448), but the net average pdistance between these two species is 18.5%. These divergences would justify the recognition of our specimen as a separate species. However, having only one male is insufficient for an adequate description of a new species.
