Diptilostatus nudipalpus Flechtmannn. sp. (Fig. 3)

FEMALE (n= 6) ­ Body robust, spindle shaped, whitish when alive; 167 (165­220), 84 (70­94) wide. Gnathosoma: projecting down; basal seta 4 (4­5); antapical setae absent in 24 females examined; chelicerae 57 (55­60). Prodorsal shield 34 (29­37), 77 (61­76) wide; shield tubercles present, 22 (21­23) apart, scapular setae (sc) missing. Shield design with admedian, submedian and transverse lines as in Fig. 3 D. Legs with all usual segments present; tibia I, genu II and femora I and II setae missing. Leg I 35 (35­36); femur 14 (12­15), ventral proximal half granulated, femoral seta (bv) missing; genu 6 (4­6), genual seta (l") 46 (44­46) on a large tubercle extending like a hood over dorsodistal half of femur; tibia 4 (4), tibial seta (l') missing; tarsus 12 (10­12), solenidion 6 (6­8), strongly knobbed, straight to slightly curved, empodium divided, each branch 5­rayed, dorsal seta (ft') 32 (31­33), lateral seta (ft") 33 (32­34), unguinal seta (u') 5 (5­7). Leg II 30 (28­33); femur 11 (11­12), bv missing; genu 2 (2­3), l" missing; tibia 3 (3­4), with a distal spine; tarsus 9 (8­10), solenidion knobbed, 7 (6­7), empodium 9 (8­9), divided, each branch 5­ rayed; ft' 10 (8­10), ft" 26 (26­30), u' 4 (4­6). Coxigenital area: coxae granulated, touching medially without indication of a sternal line. Coxa seta I (1b) 13 (10­14), 12 (11­14) apart; coxal seta II (1a) 20 (15­22), 11 (11­13) apart; coxal seta III (2a) 36 (36­51), 31 (28­ 34) apart. Coxigenital area with 10 (10­12) annuli, microtuberculate. Genitalia 40 (38­40) wide, 21 (21­18) long; genital seta (3a) 6 (5­9); epigynium with 14 (12­16) irregular longitudinal/radial lines distally and with many short dashes basally. Opisthosoma with a faint mediodorsal furrow, with a short median ridge on its anterior end. Lateral seta (c2) 31 (31­36), on annulus 1 (1) counting from genitalia rear margin; ventral seta I (d) 40 (broken) (66­80), 46 (44­51) apart, on annulus 15 (11­16); ventral seta II (e) 48 (48­60), 30 (27­33) apart, on annulus 34 (29­36); ventral seta III (f) 29 (27­29), 30 (26­30) apart, on annulus 54 (46­55) or 10 (10­11)th from rear. Total ventral annuli 63 (55­65), microtuberculate; total dorsal annuli 72 (72­78), with irregularly spaced minute pinlike structures (excretory ducts of glands? tiny microtubercles?). Caudal seta (h2) 61 (broken) (69­75); accessory seta (h1) minute.

MALE (n = 4) ­ Smaller than female, 135­154, 70­74 wide. Gnathosoma: basal seta 3­4; antapical seta missing in 6 specimens examined; chelicerae 45­46. Prodorsal shield 28­31, 53­58 wide; tubercles 18­20 apart. Legs: leg I 30­32; femur 11­13; genu 3; tibia 4; tarsus 9­10, solenidion 6­7, empodium divided, 7­8, 5­rayed, ft' 25­26, ft" 26­28, u' 4­5. Leg II 25­27; femur 11­12; genu 2­3; tibia 3­4; tarsus 7­9, solenidion 5­7, empodium 6­8, 5­rayed, ft' 6­8, ft" 23­25, u' 4­5. Coxigenital area: 1b 9, 9­11 apart; 1a 14­15, 9­10 apart; 2a 33­37, 22­26 apart. Coxigenital area with 9­11 annuli, microtuberculate. Genitalia granulate, 23­25 wide, 15­18 long, 3a 6­8. Opisthosoma: c 2 24­28, on annulus 1; d 50­65, 33­38 apart, on annulus 10­12; e 45­48, 23­26 apart, on annulus 26­29; f 25­26, 22­25 apart, on annulus 41­46 or 9th from rear. Total ventral annuli 50­55; total dorsal annuli 55­ 61; h2 54­55; h1 minute.

TYPE MATERIAL ­ Female holotype, 23 female and 6 male paratypes, from Euge­

nia uniflora L. ( Myrtaceae), "pitanga", Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil (22° 40' 32" S, 47° 38' 00" W), 08 July 2002, coll. C.H.W. Flechtmann, on 12 microscopic preparations.

RELATION TO HOST ­ vagrant on the lower leaf surface; no visible damage.

ETYMOLOGY ­ The specific designation, nudipalpus, from the Latin, nudus, bare, refers to the absence of the antapical seta on the palp.
