STATUS: U.S. ESA and IUCN - Endangered.
SYNONYMS: crinitus Gray, 1850; cristatus Hamilton-Smith, 1827; mareyi Anthony, 1907; melanotis Swainson, 1835 .
COMMENTS: Some authors believe erroneously that B. torquatus liliger, 1811, is a nomen nudum and attribute the name to Desmarest (1816a).
