Gloeocapsa compacta Kützing (1847: 24) (Fig.8H).

Colonies round to amorphous, 14.39–64.16 μm wide. Sub-colonies 4.35–15.7 μm wide. Sheath firm, smooth, non-lamellated, hyaline, red to blackish. Cell densely arranged, spherical, 1.37–6.2 µm diam. Individual envelopes firm, 0.29–2.83 µm wide, non-lamellated or rarely one lamella, hyaline, reddish to blackish. Cell content granulated, blue-green. Without cell in resisting stage.

Habitat: —Rocks; tree bark associate to Gloeocapsa stegophila, Chlorogloea sp.1, Gloeocapsa sp.1 and Hassallia byssoidea; tree bark covered by moss associate to Brasilonema robert-lamyi; and ceramic gravel.
