Brounea seungili sp. nov.

Type material. Holotype. New Zealand: Auckland (AK): ♂ (NZAC), aedeagus dissected and mounted in balsam on clear plastic card, “ New Zealand: AK: Mangamuka Rd, 21 I 1972 G.W. Ramsay, litter 72/61”, “ HOLOTYPE Brounea seungili Park and Carlton des. 2013”. Paratype (1♀). New Zealand: Auckland (AK): 1♀, Ahuroa, 240m, nr Woodcocks, 5 I 1983, J. C. Watt, litter 83/6 (NZAC).

Etymology. This species is named for Dr. Ahn lab alumnus, dead wood beetle specialist, and an enthusiastic supporter of this study, Mr. Seung-Il Lee.

Diagnosis. This species can be distinguished from the other species of Brounea by the following combination of characters: small body, length 1.4–1.5 mm; large eye, one-half length of temple (Fig. 2 k); male gula with heartshaped depression bearing dense setae (Fig. 2 v: arrow); antennomeres 4–5 longer than wide, 6–10 subquadrate; elytra subquadrate together (Fig. 1 k), hind wings reduced to small pads; median lobe slender with pointed apical lobe (Fig. 3 k); paramere long and apically blunt with setae at tip (Fig. 3 k).

Description. Length 1.4–1.5 mm. Body brown, elytra, legs, antennae and maxillary palpi paler (Fig. 1 k). Head. head triangular, widest across temples (Fig. 2 k). Male gula with heart-shaped depression bearing dense setae (Fig. 2 v: arrow). Female head unmodified. Antennomeres 1–2 elongate, 3 subquadrate, 4–5 longer than wide, 6–10 subquadrate. Frontal sulcus shallow and reaching front point of eye (Fig. 2 k). Posterior frontal fovea present and oval. Eye large and prominent, one-half length of temple (Fig. 2 k). Thorax. Prosternum longer than wide, widest one-third length. Elytra subquadrate together (Fig. 1 k). Hind wings reduced to small pads. Meso- and metaventrites together trapezoidal in ventral view, as long as wide. Abdomen. Abdominal tergite IV without patch of microtrichia. Aedeagus. Median lobe slender with pointed apical lobe (Fig. 3 k). Phallobase symmetrical and rounded (Fig. 3 k). Parameres symmetrical, long and apically blunt with setae at tip (Fig. 3 k).

Distribution. Auckland (AK) (Fig. 5: white square).

Habitat. Specimens of this species were collected by sifting leaf litter.
