Diagnosis. This species can be distinguished from the other species of Brounea by the following combination of characters: eye large, one-half length of temple (Fig. 2 b); male head swollen ventrally (Fig. 2 m); antennomeres 4–5 longer than wide, 6–10 subquadrate; median lobe as long as paramere, one-half width of parameres (Fig. 3 b).

Redescription. Length 1.7–2.0 mm. Body brown, elytra, legs, antenna and maxillary palpi paler (Fig. 1 b). Head. Male head blunt triangular, widest across temples (Fig. 1 b), swollen ventrally (Fig. 2 m). Female head unmodified. Antennomeres 1–2 elongate, 3 subquadrate, 4–5 longer than wide, 6–10 subquadrate. Frontal sulcus deep, reaching to mid-point of eye from apex of rostrum (Fig. 2 b). Anterior frontal fovea small and round. Posterior frontal fovea elongate. Eye large and prominent, one-half length of temple (Fig. 2 b). Thorax. Prosternum as long as wide, widest at one-third length. Elytra rectangular (Fig. 1 b). Hind wings of both sexes well-developed. Meso- and metaventrites together trapezoidal in ventral view, longer than wide. Abdomen. Abdominal tergite IV with a pair of transverse patches of microtrichia reaching middle. Aedeagus. Median lobe as long as paramere, onehalf width of parameres (Fig. 3 b). Phallobase symmetrical and rounded (Fig. 3 b). Parameres symmetrical, elongate triangular with setae at tip (Fig. 3 b).

Type locality. Tairua (CL), New Zealand.

Distribution. Auckland (AK), Coromandel (CL) (Fig. 4: triangles).

Habitat. Most specimens of this species were collected using window, flight intercept, and pitfall traps, or by sifting leaf and log litter in kauri, hardwood, and podocarp forests. One specimen was collected from moss.
