Eunice tribranchiata McIntosh, 1885

Eunice tribranchiata McIntosh, 1885: 297 .— Fauchald 1986: 258.— Fauchald 1992: 323.

Material examined. Challenger stn 186, Torres Strait, 10°30’S, 142°18’E, 14.6 m, coral sand, BM(NH)ZK.1885.12.1.205 (HOLOTYPE) ; BM (NH)ZK.1885.12.1.193 syntypes of Eunice torresiensis .

Remarks. Species not reported since it was first described. Holotype is a posterior fragment. McIntosh (1885) also described Eunice torresiensis from the same locality. Eunice tribranchiata re-descriptions (Fauchald 1986: 1992) are based on anterior ends present among the types of E. torresiensis considered to match up well with E. tribranchiata’ s posterior end. However, we observed differences in the shape of branchiae and of subacicular hooks, which do not justify considering them as the same species. Thus, re-descriptions of E. tribranchiata are here considered invalid, and the species is indeterminable.

Type locality. Torres Strait, Australia .
