Type species: Pellonyssus passeri Clark & Yunker, 1956 .

According to Radovsky (2010) the genus Pellonyssus contains 13 valid species, all parasites of birds, and widely distributed mainly in warmer latitudes. He did not record any occurrence of this genus in Europe, but there are at least four papers published on European records of Pellonyssus from the nests of the house sparrow ( Passer domesticus) in Hungary and the Eurasian tree sparrow ( Passer montanus) in Slovakia (Szabó et al. 2002, 2008; Švaňa et al. 2006; Fenďa et al. 2011).
