Report as epibiont on rotifers: The species was described as Epistylis rotatorium from Brachionus sp. collected near Hamburg, Germany (Kahl 1935). Later the species name was synonymized with Epistylis pygmaeum by Foissner et al. (1999). Next the species was reported as an epibiont on unidentified rotifers and planktonic crustaceans by Schödel (2018). In addition, the photograph given by Foissner et al. (1999) shows many short-stalked zooids of E. pygmaeum on the body of an adult female Brachionus sp. Wu et al. (2022) reported it as epibiont on different rotifers, including Hexarthra sp. and Filinia sp.

Rotifers of several species, including Asplanchna priodonta, Brachionus angularis, B. calyciflorus, Conochilus unicornis, Keratella crassa, Polyarthra euryptera and Synchaeta sp. were found infested by E. pygmaeum in experimental culture (Gilbert & Schröder 2003).

Remarks: This species was also reported on other hosts e.g., copepods and cladocerans (Gilbert & Schröder 2003; Clamp et al. 2016).

Epistylis sp. (in Bulut & Saler 2017)

Report as epibiont on rotifers: Epistylis sp. was observed on Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra dolichoptera and Brachionus angularis from Cip Reservoir, Türkie (Bulut & Saler 2017).

Remarks: Bulut & Saler (2017) reported this species also on adult Cyclops vicinus but not on their naupli.

Epistylis sp. (in Bozkurt & Gene 2009)

Report as epibiont on rotifers: Unidentified representative of the genus Epistylis was also reported on Brachionus angularis from Asi River, Türkie (Bozkurt & Gene 2009).

Remarks: Other hosts like copepods and cladocerans were also infected with Epistylis sp. in Asi River, Turkey (Bozkurt & Gene 2009).
