Herb with annual climbing branches and a perennial underground stem. Flowers in a compound panicle, usually bisexual, sometimes pistillate; fruiting perianth stellately expanded; stamens 5; stigmas 2-3. Fruit cup-shaped, beaked at the top; seeds horizontal; embryo annular. One sp., H. tamnoides M. Bieb., W Asia.
