Mullus argentinae Hubbs & Marini 1933

Extant specimens: MCUC ZOO.0000038 (Fig. 48).

Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Mullus brasiliensis ”.

Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): “Salmonêra”/ “Pirametára”.

Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. Veloso probably intended to describe this species, as Mullus brasiliensis was an unavailable name at his time. This name is also used in the description of this species in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript. However, more than one species were probably included in this description, as this species and other mullid (see below) were classified with the same name. Six herborized specimens of Mullus are mentioned in the Ajuda’s inventory (Ferreira 1794), but none is listed in the transference documents to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences or the University of Coimbra. Mullus argentinae occurs in the Southwestern Atlantic from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to Argentina (Menezes & Figueiredo 1985) .
