Chaetodipterus faber (Broussonet 1782)

Extant specimens: ACL-HN-0052 (Fig. 53a and MCUC ZOO.0000018 (Fig. 53b).

Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Chaetodon triostegus ”.

Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): “Enxada”/ “Guareruá”.

Comments: The specimens were originally classified as Chaetodon triostegus Linnaeus 1758 (= Acanthurus triostegus), but except for the color pattern, this is a very different species when compared to Chaetodipterus faber . A total of 24 herborized specimens of Chaetodon are listed in the Ajuda’s inventory (Ferreira 1794), while two specimens of Chaetodon triostegus are mentioned in the transference document to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, and two in the transference document to the University of Coimbra (as “ Chaetodon triostegos ”). One specimen of each collection survived. In the University of Coimbra collection, two specimens of Kyphosus have a pencil inscription with the specific name “ triostegus ” which were subsequently crossed out. These annotations seem to be done subsequently and most likely the specimens of Kyphosus are not mentioned in the transference list to Coimbra. The species is described in the Icthyologia Fluminese manuscript as “ Chaetodon triostegus ”. Antunes & Balbino (2003) also identified the specimen ACL-HN-0052 as Chaetodipterus faber (Broussonet, 1782) . The common name “enxada” is still used for this species at some regions of Brazil. Chaetodipterus faber occurs in the Western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) (Menezes & Figueiredo 1985; Burgess 2002b).
