Othonna rigens Linnaeus, Plantae Rariores Africanae: 24. 1760.

["Habitat ad Cap. b. spei."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 2: 1284 (1763). RCN: 6572.

Basionym of: Gorteria rigens (L.) L. (1763) .

Lectotype (Roessler in Mitt. Bot. Staatssamml. München 3: 371. 1959): Schreber, Herb. Linn. No. 1027.3 (LINN) .

Current name: Gazania rigens (L.) Gaertn. ( Asteraceae).

Note: Wijnands (Bot. Commelins: 84. 1981) argued that the typification by Roessler should be rejected because the thesis in which the Linnaean name was published was based largely on specimens lent to Linnaeus by Burman. While this is, in general, true, 1027.3 (LINN) is annotated as Othonna rigens by Linnaeus, and appears to be original material for both this name and Gorteria rigens (L.) L. (1763) . Consequently, Roessler’s typification is accepted here.
