Leontopithecus chrysopygus (ZMB_MAM 303, 304, 305)

Sellow collected three specimens (skins only) of the black lion tamarin ( Leontopithecus chrysopygus), a rare callitrichid restricted to the state of São Paulo (Fig. 7 b). The labels of each specimen read “ S. Paulo Sellow ”. The naturalist probably collected all three in Ipanema (the type locality of Jacchus chrysopygus Mikan), where he and Olfers stayed in 1819 and where Sellow returned in 1829. Nevertheless, every locality visited by Sellow between the Tietê and Paranapanema rivers are potential candidates as the collecting locality of these specimens.

More importantly, it appears that the existence of these three specimens has not been recorded in the literature until recently (Garbino et al. 2016). Previous literature records include the series collected by Natterer in Ipanema and Vargem Grande and some specimens collected by E. Garbe, A. Hempel and O. Hummel (Coimbra-Filho 1970; Hershkovitz 1977).
