The lacrymans group

The lacrymans group is characterized by:

1 First flagellomere subrectangular with dorsal arista.

2 Vein M with an almost right angle bend between dm-cu crossvein and apex (Fig. 1 c). 3 Males and females often with large area of brown infuscation on wing (Fig. 1 c), although sometimes faint or appearing smoky.

4 Males sometimes with black halters.

The lacrymans group comprises four Neotropical species occurring in forests (lowlands to elevations of 2000 m) along the Cordillera, and includes M. lacrymans (Costa Rica and Panama), M. cocori (Costa Rica), M. hule (Costa Rica), M. sarukhani (Costa Rica), and M. funebris (Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela).
