Type material. Syntypes: ♀, INDIA: Genji: no date, no collector (MNHN, examined). Original label (in Simon’s handwritten): 17599 Sphing. caniceps E. S, Genji. (Mdr) . Gengi: ♀ (juvenile), no date, no collector (MNHN, examined). Original label (in Simon’s handwritten): Sphingius caniceps E. Simon, Gengi. Notes: The abbreviation Mdr stands for Maindron, confirming that these specimens were collected by Monsieur Maurice Maindron during his expedition to southern India in 1901, whose collection had been studied by Simon (1906) .

Remarks. Sphingius caniceps belongs to a group of species sharing distinctive genitalic similarities in which the elliptic genital orifices are enlarged, situated in the middle of a shallow epigynal atrium.
