Agapetus tasmanicus (Mosely)

Figs 2, 40

Synagapetus tasmanicus (Mosely, in Mosely & Kimmins 1953: 498); Neboiss 1977: 36, figs 147–152; 1986b: 55.

Material examined: Holotype male: Tasmania: New Norfolk, BMNH; 160 samples from widespread localities in Tasmania, NMV; 4 samples from Tasmania, ANIC.

Diagnosis: In the form of the gonopods and in having abdominal segment IX with anterior and posterior margins almost parallel, A. tasmanicus groups with A. kimminsi, A. mittamitta sp. nov., A. monticolus, A. christineae sp. nov. and A. ablusus . Ross (1956) noted the close resemblance of A. kimminsi to A. tasmanicus, but A. tasmanicus has the gonopods in lateral view more rounded apically and the gonopods broader in ventral view. In addition, while both species have female abdominal segment VIII annulate and heavily sclerotised, A. tasmanicus has a single small swelling anteromesally (Neboiss 1977, fig. 151), unlike A. kimminsi which has 2 small prominences anteromesally (Fig. 23).

Forewing length: Male 3.5–5.0 mm; female 4.0– 4.7 mm (Neboiss 1986b).

Distribution: Known only from Tasmania where it is widespread.
