Distribution. Czech Republic, Finland, Great Britain, Japan, Norway, Russia and Sweden.

Status in CZ. Previously recorded only from Lomnice (6054) in Bohemia, based on a single female (Olejníček & Barták 1997). This specimen (7.vii.1984, M. Barták lgt., NMPC) was examined and its identity is considered uncertain, as the species is a member of taxonomically difficult M. apicalis species group. However, the occurrence of M. borealis in the Czech Republic, and central Europe in general, is confirmed by the new records given above.

Ecology. Uncertain; most specimens examined were found on trunks of deciduous trees near wetlands.
