The variety was described by Von Lendenfeld from Suno Saki, Honshu Island, Sagami Bay, Japan, Albatross Stat. 3758, approximate coordinates 34.9833°N 139.75°E, depth 95–134 m (holotype USNM 8385). Von Lendenfeld made extensive comparisons of the spicules of four of the varieties, but all appeared subject to infraspecific variation. As proposed above the variety is to be merged with the species Geodia variospiculosa Thiele, 1898 .
