Cymbaxinella Gazave, Carteron, Chenuil, Richelle-Maurer, Boury-Esnault & Borchiellini, 2010: 44, Table 2.

This ‘genus’ was erected under the rules of the Phylocode, which does not recognize ranks or type species. The ‘definition’ of Cymbaxinella is quoted from the original paper: ‘(nomen cladi novum) (branch-based): the most inclusive clade containing Cymbaxinella damicornis but not Agelas oroides, Axinella polypoides and Acanthella acuta, Suberites ficus and Scopalina lophyropoda’. The ‘genus’ name is here considered unavailable, even though encompassing several named species, notably Axinella damicornis (Esper, 1794), A. verrucosa (Esper, 1794) and A. corrugata (George & Wilson, 1919) . These species are to be reverted to the admittedly polymorphic genus Axinella Schmidt, 1862 until their status as members of Agelasida have been made under the Code of the ICZN. Phylocode and Linnean classifications show fundamental differences. The WPD and WoRMS have committed themselves to the latter.
