Hypothenemus sparsus and previously recognized synonyms have been reported from southeastern Texas and adjacent Tamaulipas in northeastern Mexico. I have examined large numbers of specimens from the broader region as well as all types. I conclude that only a single species is present. Wood (1982: 896) also suggested this synonymy. Specimens previously referred to H. sparsus by Wood have narrower interstrial scales that most specimens assigned to H. pubescens, but this should not cause problems in identification.
