Material examined. Holotype. 3. MYANMAR, N.E. Burma, Kambaiti, 2000 m, 4.VI. 1934, Malaise (in MZH). Other material. Same locality, 1 Ƥ (in MZH). INDIA, Ootacamund, 7500 feet, 24–31.XII. 1913, Fletcher, 1 Ƥ (in NHM).

Description. 3. Head. Palp and other mouthparts brownish, face light brownish, posterior parts of head brown. Antenna brownish, scape, pedicel and base of 1st flagellomere yellow. Length of 1st flagellomere about 2.5x, 2nd flagellomere 1.5x, its width. Thorax. Pronotum yellow, with 3–4 long setae. Scutum brown. Anepisternum yellowish. Preepisternum brownish. Scutellum brown, with 4 long setae. Laterotergite brownish. Mediotergite brownish, bare. Wing. Length 4.6 mm. Wing hyaline, small cell distinctly and wing apex slightly infuscate. Sc ending in C distad of middle of small cell, Sc2 ending in R1 near middle of small cell. Apical part of Sc bearing 8–9 small setae. Small cell about 2x as long as wide. Cu fork proximal to M fork. M ratios: 1.04, 1.44. Cu ratios: 0.65, 1.00. Small setae: M petiole: 0; M1: +; M2: +; Cu petiole: 0; Cu1: 1; Cu2: +. Halter pale yellowish. Legs. Coxae and femora yellow, tibiae and tarsi brownish to brown. Coxa 2 without spur. Leg ratios: bt1:t1 = 0.80, bt2:t2 =?, bt3:t3 = 0.63. Abdomen. Tergites 1 brown, 2–4 brown, with large yellow anterolateral spots, 6–7 brown. Sternites 1–5 yellow, with narrow brownish posterior margins, 6–7 brownish. Hypopygium. Figs. 7 A–D, yellow. Sternal lateral appendage comparatively short, wide, basally widest, apically rounded (Fig. 7 B). Sternal submedian filament long, apically narrow and slightly curved (Figs. 7 A–B). Aedeagus apically rounded in lateral view (Fig. 7 C). Female. Wing length 4.5 mm. Sc ending in R1, Sc1 almost or totally missing. Cu fork slightly distal to M fork. Thorax yellow, scutum with brown median longitudinal stripe, scutellum, ventral half of preepisternum, laterotergite and mediotergite yellowish. Abdomen yellowish, anterolateral corners of tergites yellow. Leg ratios: bt1:t1 = 0.79, bt2:t2 = 0.68, bt3:t3 = 0.60. Terminalia yellow. The Indian Ƥ (which may represent another closely related species) has darker thorax with only the pronotum, anepisternum, and dorsal half of preepisternum yellow.

Discussion. Mycomya panthera is a large species and has a large hypopygium compared to the other Himalayan species of the subgenus Cymomya . The shapes of the sternal lateral appendage and sternal submedian filament are diagnostic. The sternal submedian filaments of M. panthera are slightly shorter than the sternal lateral appendages (Fig. 7 A–B), which are wide, apically rounded of the shape of a reversed U (Fig. 7 B) and the apex of the aedeagus is about 2x as wide as its subapical narrowest part in the lateral view (Fig. 7 C), whereas in the other Himalayan species the apex is only slightly wider than its subapical part (Figs. 4 C, 5D, 6C).

Etymology. The species name is a noun in apposition and refers to the big Asian members of the cat family.
