Dendrocoelum mariae Stocchino & Sluys, 2013

Dendrocoelum mariae was found in a spring on the Asinara Island National Park in northern Sardinia (Punta della Scomunica Spring). Animals are usually provided with a pair of eyes, but supernumerary eyes (2-3 on either side) are often present. Moreover, this species is characterized by an adenodactyl that is much larger than the penis papilla and a copulatory apparatus localized far behind the pharynx. The presence of a true sphincter in the terminal tract of the bursal canal is a character shared with the other two Sardinian dendrocoelids (see below) (Stocchino et al., 2013c).
