Thuja cupressoides Linnaeus, Systema Naturae, ed. 12, 2: 633; Mantissa Plantarum: 125. 1767.

"Habitat ad Cap. b. spei." RCN: 7254.

Type not designated.

Original material: [icon] in Shaw, Cat. Pl. Afr. As.: 40, f. 188. 1738.

Current name: Widdringtonia nodiflora (L.) Powrie ( Cupressaceae).

Note: Powrie (in J. S. African Bot. 38: 303. 1972) incorrectly treated this name as homotypic with Brunia nodiflora L. (1753), typified by material in the Clifford herbarium. Thuja cupressoides is an independent name and Farjon (Monogr: Cupressaceae Sciadopitys: 471. 2005) indicated the cited Shaw plate as the holotype (which it is not). It may well be the obvious choice as lectotype, but because Farjon’s statement was published after 1 Jan 2001, the omission of the phrase "designated here" or an equivalent (Art. 7.11) means that the choice is not effective.
