Trapa natans Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 120. 1753.

"Habitat in Europae australis, Asiaeque stagnis limosis." RCN: 990.

Type not designated.

Original material: [icon] in Rheede, Hort. Malab. 11: 65, t. 33. 1692.

Generitype of Trapa Linnaeus.

Current name: Trapa natans L. ( Trapaceae).

Note: Ghazanfar (in Nasir & Ali, Fl. W. Pakistan 97: 3. 1976) indicated 158.1 (LINN) as type but this is unannotated by Linnaeus, and sterile, and is not original material for the name. Material in Herb. Clifford (BM) exists, as well as a Rheede illustration, but both are sterile. Because of the importance of fruit characters, Verdcourt in Kew Bull. 41: 448 (1986) therefore designated a fruiting specimen (Fiori 471, K) as a neotype. Although this is contrary to Art. 9.15, Verdcourt’s neotype choice could be corrected to an epitype (Art. 9.8) if one of the original elements were to prove to be a suitable lectotype.
