Trifolium suffocatum Linnaeus, Mantissa Plantarum Altera: 276. 1771.
"Habitat in Siciliae arenosis." RCN: 5682.
Lectotype (Lassen in Turland & Jarvis in Taxon 46: 482. 1997): [icon] " Trifolium suffocatum " in Jacquin, Hort. Bot. Vindob. 1: 24, t. 60. 1770.
Current name: Trifolium suffocatum Jacq. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).
Note: This name was published by Linnaeus but without reference to Jacquin. However, in Linnaeus’ own copy of Mant. Pl. Alt. at LINN, there is a reference to Jacquin written in, and "Jacq. hort." is cited by Linnaeus in a later account (in Syst. Veg., ed. 13: 574. 1774). Jacquin (1770) included a description with his binomial, adding "Linn. mant. part. 2.". The two names are clearly the same and, since Jacquin published a year before Linnaeus, the name is attributable to him.
