Tillandsia utriculata Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 286. 1753.

"Habitat in Americae meridionalis arboribus." RCN: 2272.

Neotype (Till in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 94. 1993): Jamaica. Middlesex County, St Ann Parish, Cole Gate about 4 miles south of Ocho Rios, 210m, 20 Aug 1992, W Till 9014 (WU; iso- BM, US).

Generitype of Tillandsia Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 144. 1929).

Current name: Tillandsia utriculata L. ( Bromeliaceae).

Note: Smith & Downs (in Fl. Neotropica 14: 972. 1977) indicated unspecified material in Herb. Sloane (BM-SL) as type. However, although Linnaeus referred to a Sloane polynomial in the protologue, it was (unusually) unaccompanied by an illustration. The material would not have been seen by Linnaeus and cannot be original material for the name, nor is there any other. Till therefore designated a neotype from Jamaica.
