Trifolium officinale Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 765. 1753.
"Habitat in Europae campestribus." RCN: 5640.
Lectotype (Sales & Hedge in Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 51: 173. 1993): Herb. Burser XVIII(2): 64 (UPS) .
Current name: Melilotus officinalis (L.) Lam. ( Fabaceae: Faboideae).
Note: Specific epithet spelled " M. officinalis " [ “M.” for “Melilotus”] in the protologue. Later corrected to T. officinale in Systema Naturae, ed. 10, 2: 1176 (1759). As is established custom, the “Melilotus” is to be ignored (see Art. 23.8 and Ex. 19).
Jafri (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 86: 220. 1980) treated Herb. Linn. No. 930.4 (LINN) as the type, but this sheet is annotated "polnicum 3" by Linnaeus and is not original material for T. officinale .
