Generitype of Tagetes Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 182. 1929).

Current name: Tagetes erecta L. ( Asteraceae).

Note: Tagetes patula L. was treated as the generitype by Rydberg (N. Amer. Fl. 34: 149. 1915; see McNeill & al. in Taxon 36: 386. 1987). However, under Art. 10.5, Ex. 7 (a voted example) of the Vienna Code, this is a type choice made under the American Code and is to be replaced under Art. 10.5b by Green’s choice (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 182. 1929) of T. erecta .

Grierson (in Dassanayake & Fosberg, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1: 234. 1980) indicated unspecified Clifford material as type, failing to distinguish between two relevant sheets there. As they do not appear to be part of a single gathering, Art. 9.15 does not apply, and Howard’s choice of material in LINN as the type is accepted here.
