Phoxinus abanticus

Common name. Abant minnow.

Diagnosis. Distinguished from other species of Phoxinus in West Asia by: ● no scales on chest in male and female / ● 60–69 total lateral line scales / ● caudal peduncle depth 1.8–2.3 times in length / ○ no supraorbital ridge / ○ no depression behind nostrils. Size up to 63 mm SL.

Distribution . Türkiye: Lake Abant basin.

Habitat. A wide range of cold and well-oxygenated habitats, from small, fast-flowing streams to lake shores. Spawns on clean gravel areas in flowing water.

Biology. No data.

Conservation status. LC; has a small range but its population trend seems to be stable and there are no major threats.

Remarks. Closely related to P. strandjae and P. kottelati and it is expected that future research will demonstrate their conspecificity.
